Program Note:

I composed this piece in the Fall of 2001 while I was an undergraduate at the University of Southern California. It is the second of a three-movement “Brass Quintet No. 1,” but it was the first to be composed, and the only movement that has “aged” well. It was essentially through-composed, and at the climax, quotes The Death of Tibault from Prokofiev’s first suite to Romeo and Juliet. I had played the work at Eastern Music Festival before I went to USC. As is often done, we performed a collection of movements from the first and second suites, and while I had enjoyed the entire set that we played, this particular selection made the deepest impact on me. I think this is typical among most players and listeners!
