Des Knaben Wunderhorn-Cover Art-1.jpg

Program Note:

During his summer retreats at his “Häuschen” in Steinbach am Attersee in 1895 and 1896, Gustav Mahler cast his setting of Es Sungen drei Engel einen süßen Gesang as the fifth movement of his Third Symphony. I have always loved this symphony, and this movement in particular because of its use of two choirs and the colors that the composer creates with them and the orchestra. In this setting for brass, I have tried to capture the changes in character and timbre.

The text of this Lied comes from the third volume of Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim’s famous collection of folksongs entitled Des Knaben Wunderhorn (1805–8).
